Sport for Peace tournament unites six bomas in Magwi County

WPESS hosted a "Sport for Peace" football tournament held over two days in Obbo Payam, Magwi County, one of the areas hardest hit by conflict, marked by insecurity, mistrust, and displacement between neighboring communities.

The tournament brought together 325 players from six bomas (Labato, Lowudo, Alia, Lerwa, Cama, and Licari), including 150 women playing alongside 150 men, with 25 community leaders taking part and more than 1,000 spectators attending. Organizers focused on creating a supportive environment where women could take part in sport feeling safe, motivated, and empowered.

The event was supported by GIZ South Sudan through the Community-Driven Rural Development (CDRD) project, jointly funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Local officials, including Magwi County's Executive Director and the President of the Magwi County Local Football Association, took part in the event.
